Cryotherapy comes from the Greek term “Cryo” meaning cold and “Therapeia” meaning cure. Whole Body Cryotherapy originated in Japan in 1978 with Dr. Yamaguchi. Freezing treatments were used for pain management and Rheumatoid Arthritis. It was found that the rapid decrease of temperature of the outer layer of the skin lead to the immediate release of endorphins, therefore less sensitivity to pain.
Whole Body Cryotherapy consists of 2-3 minute sessions with below zero temperatures ranging from -100 degrees Fahrenheit to -220 degrees Fahrenheit, reducing your body’s temperature 30-50 degrees Fahrenheit. There are many benefits to Cryotherapy and the use of Cryotherapy machines, which are also known as Cryosaunas. Research and clinical studies show that Cryotherapy can be used to treat and relieve muscle pain and soreness. This makes it an effective alternative to the low-tech applications, such as ice packs and ice bath immersion. Cryotherapy can relieve muscle pain, sprains, swelling, and joint stiffness. Many clients also report improvements in sleep quality and restfulness.
How Does Cryotherapy Work?
Whole Body Cryotherapy sessions work by subjecting client’s skin to controlled levels of gas in the form of nitrogen, or “Cold Air”. The session is conducted in a device called a cryochamber. Before treatment, the cryochamber is pre-cooled and the client is given informed consent. The client then enters the chamber wearing socks, slippers, gloves, and their choice of clothing (most choose undergarments for better results). The more skin exposure, the better.
Our XR Recovery chamber has different size pads that are placed within the chamber according to a persons height. This allows the clients head to be outside of the chamber. During the session bursts of nitrogen are released into the chamber, directed away from the client’s skin. The short bursts are to maintain the controlled therapeutic temperature within the chamber. Immediately after the session, many clients experience marked improvements in pain and joint discomfort, and notice measurable reductions in joint edema (increased intra-articular fluid). Most also experience increase energy levels with the endorphin release, typically experienced after intense exercise.
The initial cold response elicits a strong sympathetic nervous system reaction. This causes a dramatic parasympathetic rebound. The circulatory system undergoes dramatic peripheral vasoconstriction followed by strong rebound vasodilation. This improves peripheral vascular tone while reducing histamine (inflammation makers) release due to vascular permeability.
The neuromuscular system responds with a decrease in troponin I, creatine kinase and edema. Positive immune responses include increased white blood cell counts, increased anti-inflammatory cytokines, and reduced pro-inflammatory prostaglandin PGE2.
Two to three minute minutes of skin exposure to Whole Body Cryotherapy temperatures (-175F to -220F) stimulates the body to initiate the “fight-or-flight Response.” The body will reactively produce endorphins and redirect oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood to the vital organs to defend against what the body perceives as a threat. Once out of the cryochamber, this oxygenated blood and endorphins are released back to the peripheral tissues, decreasing histamine makers, helping mend damages muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments.

Is Cryotherapy dangerous?
No, the liquid nitrogen that is used as a chilling agent does not come into contact with your skin, and it is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we breathe (actually 78% of it). In the chamber, a person breathes room-air. For added safety, chambers are equipped with an oxygen monitor. A trained operator is always present during the treatment to control the temperature levels and monitor your comfort. Nitrogen is a friendly, non-toxic gas. Nitrogen composes 78% of the air that we breathe. The other components are 16% Oxygen, 1% Hydrogen and 5% other gases. Nitrogen is as common and safe as Oxygen.
About Our Oxygen Sessions :
Our Oxygen Relaxation Room offers non-medical oxygen while you relax on plush reclining chairs, integrated with massage and heating capabilities. The air we breath normally contains 21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen. Other gases such as carbon dioxide, argon and trace gases make up the other remaining 1%. Our oxygen sessions will provide 90%-92% oxygen at 3 liters of oxygen per minute per person. This allows you to breath 4 to 5 times more oxygen that you would normally take in. The oxygen session will uplift and refresh you as well as detoxify, giving you and overall great feeling!
Breathing higher concentrations of oxygen has many benefits.
